Birthstones & White Bean Dip

March’s birthstones are aquamarine & bloodstone.

A gift of Aquamarine symbolizes both safety & security, especially within long standing relationships. Some people even say that the Aquamarine reawakens love in a tired marriage.

Aquamarine, also known as beryl, is mentioned in the Bible – Old & New Testament:

The Breastplate of Aaron: “And they mounted four rows of stones on it. The first row was a row of ruby, topaz, & emerald; & the second row, a turquoise, a sapphire & a diamond; & the third row, a jacinth, an agate, & an amethyst; & the fourth row, a beryl, an onyx, & a jasper. They were set in gold filigree settings when they were mounted.”
Exodus 39:10-13

Ezekiel’s lamentation upon the king of Tyrus: “You were in Eden, the garden of God; Every precious stone was your covering: the ruby, the topaz & the diamond; the beryl, the onyx & the jasper; the lapis lazuli, the turquoise & the emerald; & the gold, the workmanship of your settings & sockets, was in you. On the day that you were created they were prepared.”
Ezekiel 28:13

Gems of New Jerusalem: “The material of the wall was jasper; & the city was pure gold, like clear glass. The foundation stones of the city wall were adorned with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation stone was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, chalcedony; the fourth, emerald; the fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolite; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, topaz; the tenth, chrysoprase; the eleventh, jacinth; the twelfth, amethyst.”
Revelation 21:18 – 20

An alternate birthstone for March is Bloodstone, a dark green opaque quartz flecked with red spots. The name Bloodstone derives from the legendary belief that the red coloration resulted from the blood of Christ spilling onto green jasper during the crucifixion. For this reason, too, the stone has been called “martyr’s stone.” Bloodstone is mined in India, Brazil, Uruguay, Australia, & the United States. Ideal for carving into cameos & beads, this stone symbolizes courage.

March is winding down fast…
