Woodpecker & Bird Seed Bars

April 27, 2011

Red bellied woodpecker 1

A large, male Red-bellied Woodpecker thinks that if he knocks hard enough, loud enough & often enough the window will either open or break for him to come inside our house. Don’t get me wrong, I love this guy. He’s gorgeous, we’ve fed him & his friends all winter, but I would really rather not replace his chosen window.

Many times a day I walk out to the deck & wave my arms saying, “stop that bird!” Not easy to do last week when I had lost my voice!

Bird Seed Bars

These are for people to eat, not to share with the birds!

  • 2 cups whole grain Cereal (flakes or squares), lightly crushed
  • 2 cups rolled Oats
  • 1/2 cup raw Almonds
  • 1/2 cup raw Pumpkin Seeds
  • 1/2 cup raw Sunflower Seeds
  • 1/2 cup dried Dates – chopped
  • 1/2 cup Raisins – chopped
  • 1/3 cup Almond Butter
  • 1/3 cup Molasses or Honey
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla
  • 1 Tablespoon unsalted Butter
  • 2 Tablespoons (or more) Hot Water

  1. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine the cereal, oats, almonds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, dates & raisins.
  2. In a small saucepan, heat the almond butter, vanilla, butter & molasses;
Stir while heating until warm & smooth. Do not boil!
  3. Pour the warm mixture into the dry cereal & nuts, stirring well.
  4. Pour into a buttered 9×13 size pan, using damp fingers, press to pack down.
  5. Allow to cool completely then cut into squares.

Makes 24 servings.
