A few years ago my neighbor, Carole was re-landscaping some of her yard. There was no longer room for her hardy hibiscus.

She asked if we wanted it. Sure – we’ll put it in a bed along the driveway until we decide where to put it permanently.

Six years later it’s still in the bed along the driveway, under the hummingbird feeder with Black-eyed Susans (Rudbeckia hirta) filling in the surrounding area.

The blooms are huge, about 12 inches across. They look like something one would expect to see in paradise.

Black-eyed Susan Cocktail

I would have given you a recipe for a Hibiscus Cocktail, but I didn’t want to have to tell you how to make syrup from hibiscus flowers. Maybe I will make some from our flowers…

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup Orange Juice
  • 1/2 cup Pineapple Juice
  • 3 Tablespoons Vodka
  • 3 Tablespoons Light Rum
  • 2 Tablespoons Orange Liqueur
  • Crushed Ice
  • Garnishes: Lime Slices, Fresh Cherries

Instructions:

  1. Stir together first 5 ingredients.
  2. Fill 2 (12-oz.) glasses with crushed ice.
  3. Pour orange juice mixture over ice.
  4. Garnish, if desired.
  5. Serve immediately.
