Memory Screening & Strawberry Smoothie

November 22, 2011

A “Memory Screening” event, an initiative of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, was held last Wednesday at The Cumberland, a luxury assisted living facility. The desire is to recognize early signs of cognitive impairment so treatment, intervention can begin.

Interesting, the mental health social worker who was leading this community screening mentioned that screening for depression is vital when addressing possible loss of mental acuity. What some feel is a beginning of Alzheimer’s could very well be depression which can be treated through various means, starting with counseling, diet, exercise & pharmaceuticals.

We also discussed the role diet plays
not only in Alzheimer’s but in depression. Because she counsels patients & their primary care givers, she is always looking for the best way to guide folks to healthy living choices. The recent studies with low carbohydrate, moderate fat (especially saturated fat, like coconut oil) diet look quite promising. As long as there is no dietary allergy to coconut, a single tablespoon of coconut oil can be added three times a day to meals (in hot cereal, on bread, in coffee) with no side effects & possibly great improvement in mental functioning. Hey, it couldn’t hurt!
