Christmas Alphabet: R is for Reindeer

December 15, 2011

R is for Reindeer. You know, Dasher & Dancer & Prancer & Vixen, Comet & Cupid & Donder & Blitzen. Yep, even Rudolph!

Did you now that what we know as “reindeer” are actually called caribou in North America?

Reindeer 2

The connection of reindeer with Santa Claus began in 1823 with the publication of the poem, “Twas The Night Before Christmas,” which I recited every day between Thanksgiving & Christmas driving the boys to school & by request at P.D.S. Christmas parties. I can still recite it & I bet they can, too.

Rudolph appeared in 1939, distributed as a booklet in the Montgomery Ward Stores, written by Robert L. May.

So, when you put out the plate of cookies for Santa, always remember to add a bit of reindeer chow. Hey, it ain’t easy pulling a jolly, fat man around the world in a sleigh in a single night!
