Iron Horse Vineyards
Sonoma County California is the largest producer of wine in the California Wine Country which also includes Napa, Mendocino & Lake counties.
DH & I have visited Napa before & loved it, but thought this time we would check out Sonoma.
Iron Horse Vineyards was our first stop because we have enjoyed their wines for years & because it was first on our way from the Redwood preserve.
Tall palm trees line the entrance – yep, palms grow this far north because of the microclimate! Every surrounding field was planted in grapes.
The tasting bar is outside which was wonderful on this beautiful day, the mist having cleared. Waiting patiently next to the bar was the winery cat keeping the estate safe from vermin which would try to steal grapes or setup housekeeping in the storage areas. It is rare to see dogs at wineries, but almost a certainty that you will see a cat.
The hospitality folks were lovely & the wine delicious. DH selected a bottle to take with us for dinner.
Hint: When visiting a winery, request a “Reserve Tasting” that way you are served the finest wines they have to offer. These wines are available for purchase only at the winery or as a member of the winery wine club. They are made from grapes grown on the estate property (no purchased grapes from surrounding vineyards) & oh my goodness will you be so glad you did. Also, you can share a tasting. DH & I did.
