St. Francis Winery & Vineyards

April 30, 2013

Just so you know, all of the events so far were our 1st day in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County California. That’s one state park & 5 wineries in one day. (Remember, we were sharing reserve tastings.)

We’re beginning to fatigue & our very early flight of the previous day was beginning to take its toll on us. We decided we would visit one more winery before finding a grocery store for something to throw on the grill for dinner.

St. Francis Winery has been in operation since 1971 on 600 prime acres in Sonoma County. As we turned the car onto the property we noticed a sign denoting an organic garden which is used by the dining facility at the winery.

The classic adobe bell tower which graces the label of all St. Francis wines was our entrance into the tasting area where we met our server, John. It turns out that John is a renown judge for wine competitions. We told him of our fascination with wine & how we were trying to learn all we could having started some 35 years earlier with the readily available Gallo Red Rosé. He shared the history of the Gallo wine family with us then proceeded to draw a judging grid on a cocktail napkin.

John spent over 2 hours with us while also serving other patrons as they came to the bar & for us it was time well spent. We learned so much in those 2 hours because we had an expert teacher guiding us. (I brought the napkins home with me after I had John autograph them.) We enjoyed a number wines & had them shipped home…they should arrive… :0)

St Francis

Thank you, St. Francis Winery, for hiring this San Francisco engineer who is building the new San Francisco subway, who is also a wine judge & a teacher at a local college training those interested in wine to discern variety, vintage, every single thing you could possibly glean from a single glass of wine.
